Google and T-Mobile on Tuesday, 23rd of September introduced the first cellphone powered by Google's Android software in New York. You will get this cellphone for only $179 with a two-year voice and data contract which is $20 cheaper than the iPhone.

This cellphone only available in the United kingdom, also only T-Mobile, and across Europe (Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and the Netherlands) in the first quarter of 2009. But, the pricing for Europe was not immediately known.

G1The G1 has a large color touch screen that slides out to expose a full keyboard as well as 3-megapixel camera.Because of powered by Google, it provides Internet browser and easy to access to many of Google's services, including search Gmail and YouTube.

The G1, which is manufactured by HTC of Taiwan, has enough cellphone for you all to grab it (Of course if you are living in that specific area). The following I quote from HTC website for the highlights of this phone:

  • 3.2-inch TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with HVGA (320 X 480 pixel) resolution.
  • Full 5-row QWERTY keyboard.
  • One-click Google Search.
  • Customizable Home screen with instant Email, text message and IM notifications.
  • Instant access to Google services (Gmail, YouTube, Maps, Google Talk, Calendar). High-speed 3.5G network connection.
  • Wi-Fi technology with seamless transition to open networks.
  • Android Market with access to variety of software and media downloads. (some fees may apply)
  • 3.2 megapixel color camera with auto focus.
  • microSDTM (SD 2.0 compatible) expansion slot for all your storage needs.

It's a game changing phone, since it's the first one to run Android, which is open source version of Linux especially designed for mobiles by Google. This means you can customize the device to your needs through applications that you developed or have downloaded from the Internet. The good thing is most Linux based applications come free of charge or really cheap, so you will not have any problems with making your phone unique.

Because of this is the first cellphone from it's generation, so there is enough room for improvement. Developers are already working on new applications. It's time for you all as a developer to build your own application for G1.
