British Airways warned union leaders yesterday that it is considering a pay freeze for its 42,000 staff this year and that thousands of jobs could go.
The airline issued the warning after posting losses of £70million for the first nine months of its financial year - compared with a profit of £816million a year ago.
BA confirmed it is in talks with staff unions about 'pay and productivity' as it looks to cut costs to offset falling sales and profits.
Chief executive Willie Walsh said: 'We had planned to reduce the numbers - we are looking at any opportunity to cut the cost base. We are continuing to look at the numbers of people employed - it is a regular activity.'
