The team had been performing in Weston-super-Mare and were on their way back to Bristol airport.
The 737 was heading for Cardiff at 2,500ft when the Red Arrows were mistakenly instructed by air traffic controllers in Bristol to climb to the same height.
The controllers had not been informed by their colleagues in Cardiff about the approaching passenger plane.
The lead Red Arrows pilot told investigators that without the chance sighting of the 737 'the risk of collision would have been extremely high'.
