Alaska Airlines is the latest carrier to launch in-flight Wi-Fi, offering passengers on a specially equipped Boeing 737 a service that uses satellites instead of cellular towers to connect the plane to the Internet.

Like other airlines, Alaska won't let passengers talk over VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) while in flight. They are invited to surf the Web, send and receive e-mail and instant messages, access games and multimedia content and use corporate VPNs (virtual private networks). Users can access the network with any Wi-Fi device, including phones and portable media players. They will get an opening Web page with news, music, shopping and links to services on the airline's homepage.

Atif Irfan, his brother, their wives, a sister and three children had been on their way to a religious conference in Orlando, Florida, from Washington.

Mr Irfan's sister-in-law, Inayet Sahin, said: 'The conversation, as we were walking through the plane trying to find our seats, was just about where the safest place in an airplane is.

'We were discussing whether it was safest to sit near the wing, or the engine or the back or the front, but that's it. We didn't say anything else that would raise any suspicion.'

More than 40 passengers ran riot on a Thomas Cook flight from London Gatwick to Cuba, with one trying to open the emergency exit in mid-flight.

On the return flight on December 30, the same group were again drunk and 17 were stopped from reboarding for the second leg of their trip at Cuba's Varadero airport.

Police met their flight at Gatwick and Thomas Cook is investigating events with a view to a possible complaint to police.

Like giant toys discarded by a careless child, this collection of abandoned aeroplanes is a stark reminder of the current parlous state of the air industry.

Pristine aircraft owned by stricken budget airlines from around the world are being stored at Lasham Airfield near Basingstoke as they wait for their future to be decided.

(Computerworld Australia) Linux will be a passenger in every seat on Qantas' Airbus A380s airplanes. All of the airline's superjumbos -- the first of which will commence flying next week -- will have their in-flight entertainment systems powered by the operating system.

The A380 is the first Qantas aircraft to utilize the Panasonic eX2 Inflight Entertainment System (IFE).

All of Panasonic's X Series of IFE systems run on Linux.

And Qantas is not limiting it to the A380s. The systems will be featured in Qantas' next batch of B737-800 aircraft, due in March 2009 and that will use the Panasonic eFX system, for both its business- and economy-class customers; its B787 or Dreamliner aircraft also due next year; and on some of its older but soon-to-be revamped B767-300 fleet.
